Who could have imagined that back in 1895, a group of concerned citizens in Tacoma would come together to start a nonprofit dedicated to providing basic needs for children and families—and that, 130 years later, we'd still be here, making a difference. While I wish I could tell you that meeting these basic needs is no longer a challenge in our community, the reality is that it's more crucial than ever as families continue to struggle to make ends meet.

Over our first 100 years, HopeSparks grew and evolved from a basic needs organization into one focused on preventing and treating the effects of abuse and neglect on children. This shift was made possible through mental health and counseling services, which were reflected in our name changes and steady growth over many decades. During the past 30 years, HopeSparks has intentionally transformed into a comprehensive family services organization, integrating prevention-focused services that address the needs of the entire family.

Today, we are a proud leader in the Puget Sound region providing early intervention, behavioral health, kinship care, home visiting, and parent education, offering life-changing support to thousands of children and families impacted by trauma and adversity each year. As we celebrate this milestone, we honor our history while recognizing the continued urgency of our mission to strengthen families and create lasting change. HopeSparks envisions a world where every child and family is safe, secure, and stable, and that all children have the nurturing relationships they need to thrive.
